Catherine Hurley~

When I first started dirt biking, I was used to the consistent surface and traction of road racing. However, I quickly discovered that riding on dirt trails was a whole new ball game. I found myself constantly tipping over in seemingly easy sections.

I crashed seven times in the first mile, submerged my bike, and even popped the chain off. Despite the frustration, the stunning view from the outlook at the top of the trail washed away my brief moment of anger and sparked a new motivation to figure out the world of dirt bike riding.

My mother and I were both working from home at the time and decided to go hit the road and check out some dirt biking spots in the eastern US. In about no time at all i was hooked, so we sold all the road racing stuff, and let the obsession take over(laughs). There was just one problem...I still needed to figure out how to ride a dirt bike in the terrain I enjoyed. All the classes and coaches I found in Minnesota were either ultra basic or motocross style clinics. I found out quickly I enjoyed riding through rocks and didnt have a desire to go super fast. I just wanted to learn what it took to control my dirt bike. So, me and my Mom went on a few road trips and took some lessons from riders including, Graham Jarvis, Kalyn Benaroya, and Megs Braap.

UNTIL ONE DAY...

I met Nick Claire aka Splat_moto on a randomn trip to California. A Hard Enduro enthusiast with a seemingly very similar mindset of what was fun to ride on dirt bikes. Nick started expressing ways of looking at things on the trail and simply just teaching techniques that he though were important to get into my riding in order to become more efficient through technical trails.

And it all stemmed from one thing...

CONTEXT. Nick taught me the importance of understanding the context of each situation on a dirt bike. Not just how to "hit a log" but that there were many ways to hit a log depending on the terrain and conditions. This is just one example, of how context applies to different situations. He also taught me many simple drills to practice that seemed easy but in fact got me to start uncovering many details I had never even thought of.

Between Nick and his brother Sam being so interested in education and having a knack for relating this cool new info to me, we decided to partner together to build the new and improved curriculum for the Leaky Mushroom Moto Ranch. Now together we build classes for all levels (novice, intermediate, advanced & womens only classes) with the intent to teach riders the CONTEXT of various trail situations and ways of approaching them. Our goal became making the info relatable to any skill level in terms almost anyone can understand. That way they have the skills to think through any problem rather than "just send it".
